Cathy Sutherland

Cathy creates elegant jewellery and small silverware using traditional hand tools and the techniques of chasing and repoussé. These processes are fundamental to her work- they form the basis of her jewellery as she creates intricate, tactile and beautiful objects that evoke the natural world.

Cathy’s jewellery is formed under steel punches and each piece goes through rounds of hammering. Inspired by rippling sand dunes, subtle veins of skeleton leaves and the branched patterns of ice crystals; networks of flowing lines are chased into the surface of the silver and the deeper textures are formed on the reverse.

The process is long but therapeutic and she embraces the time spent making. Cathy wants to celebrate the hand crafted qualities, as it makes each piece unique, so the hammer marks remain on the surface of the metal. The branching patterns of each design flow into one another and the pearly white finish of the silver is often highlighted with gold or coloured stones.
