Mikala Djorup
Mikala did a traditional 4 year jewellery apprenticeship in her native Copenhagen before graduating with first class honours from London Metropolitan University.
Soon after graduating, she opened her shop in cosy Gabriel's Wharf which she ran successfully for 11 years, before moving to the iconic Oxo Tower. The new space has a distinct Nordic feel which reflects Mikala's Danish background.
Mikala makes wearable jewellery, modern with a glance back in time. Her work is dominated by classic simple shapes, matt surfaces and a combination of unusual diamonds and pearls.
She explains “I am fascinated by repetition and movement. Many hundred elements that look the same, but examined closer are all individual and different. The making of the elements by hand ensures this diversity. The repetition creates surfaces full of life, they change and move with their wearer, and in some cases surprises and creates the joy of the unexpected”.
She works mainly with gold and silver but also experiments with other materials, but seems to always return to the metals. She describes the way she works with the materials stating, “I make the silver matt, white or scratched, almost as if it is not finished and still have the roughness of work in progress. When worn these surfaces will change and become shiny and darker, and the wearer will have put hers or his mark on the piece”.
